Dental sealants are a fantastic way to help protect your child's teeth from cavities - and they may be covered by your insurance plan! Here's everything you need to know about this preventative procedure.

What are dental sealants?

Dental sealants are thin, clear or white coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of your child's back teeth. They act as a barrier, preventing plaque and bacteria from sticking in the pits and grooves of these teeth.

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), sealants may prevent up to 80% of cavities for two years and 50% of cavities for up to four years after they are applied.

What is the normal lifespan of dental sealants?

Dental sealants may last for up to ten years, provided that your child takes good care of their teeth. We will examine the sealants every six months to see if they need to be replaced or repaired.

Does getting dental sealants hurt?

No numbing or drilling required – the dentist will first perform a thorough cleaning with a special toothbrush to prepare the teeth. The sealant material is then placed on the tooth, before a special light is used to harden the sealants on the chewing surfaces. And that's it! Your child can eat and drink straight away after the procedure.
